What is dosage?

Not everyone loves sweet wine...some people only drink sweet wine...I tend to lean towards more dry sparkling wines myself, and sometimes understanding the lingo comes in handy when looking for a bottle. The level of sweetness of a sparkling wine is decided by the winemaker and his or her addition of dosage. Simply put, dosage is the sugar/wine mixture added to sparkling wine to help balance out the acidity. More technically speaking, dosage is a liqueur added to sparkling wine after the bottle has gone through secondary fermentation and aging. It consists of a mixture of reserve wine and very pure cane sugar. The quantity of of dosage added determines the sweetness of the final product. See below...
